Questões Globais

Global Issues

Expressões como 'It seems that...', 'It could be argued that...', 'One might suggest that...', 'There is some evidence to suggest...' suavizam afirmações e demonstram pensamento crítico.
It could be argued that social media has done more harm than good.
Pode-se argumentar que...
There is some evidence to suggest that renewable energy is becoming more affordable.
It would appear that inequality has increased despite economic growth.
One might suggest that individual actions alone are insufficient.
It is widely believed that climate change requires global cooperation.
To some extent, globalisation has contributed to economic growth.
Até certo ponto.
It is generally accepted that education is key to reducing poverty.
It seems likely that sea levels will continue to rise.

Usamos FAR / MUCH / SIGNIFICANTLY + comparativo para enfatizar diferenças. TWICE / THREE TIMES + AS...AS para proporções. THE + superlativo para destacar extremos.
Ireland's GDP per capita is significantly higher than the EU average.
Carbon emissions in developed countries are twice as high as in developing nations.
The wealthiest 1% own far more than the poorest 50% combined.
Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in Europe to rent property.
Renewable energy is becoming increasingly affordable.
The situation has deteriorated considerably since last year.
Scandinavian countries are often cited as the most equal societies.
Social media usage among teenagers has risen dramatically.

It has been estimated that 700 million people live in extreme poverty.
New measures are expected to be implemented by 2030.
The agreement was signed by 195 countries.
Significant progress has been made in reducing child mortality.
It is recommended that emissions be reduced by 50%.
The report was commissioned by the United Nations.
Further research is needed to determine the long-term effects.
Climate targets are required to be met by all member states.

Third e Mixed Conditionals para Cenários Globais

Os condicionais avançados são perfeitos para discutir 'what if' em questões globais. O condicional 3 analisa decisões passadas que moldaram o mundo atual. Condicionais mistos conectam políticas passadas a consequências presentes.
If the Industrial Revolution hadn't happened, the climate would be very different now.
Misto.
If nations had acted sooner on climate change, we wouldn't be facing this crisis.
Tipo 3.
If Ireland hadn't joined the EU, its economy would not have grown so rapidly.

Falando sobre Causa e Efeito

Para discutir relações de causa e efeito em questões globais, usamos uma variedade de estruturas: LEAD TO / RESULT IN (resultar em), GIVE RISE TO (dar origem a), BRING ABOUT (provocar), STEM FROM / RESULT FROM (provir de), BE DUE TO (ser devido a), BE ATTRIBUTED TO (ser atribuído a), HAVE AN IMPACT ON (ter impacto em).

Contexto Inglês Irlandês

Cultura, história e curiosidades do Inglês Irlandês

🕊️ Irish Neutrality

Ireland has been militarily neutral since independence. Unlike most EU countries, Ireland is not a member of NATO. This neutrality is a source of national pride — Ireland sees itself as a mediator and peacekeeper. Irish troops serve in UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.

The Good Friday Agreement (1998)

After decades of conflict in Northern Ireland (The Troubles), the Good Friday Agreement brought peace. Signed on 10 April 1998, it established power-sharing between unionists (who want to remain in the UK) and nationalists (who want a united Ireland). The agreement is considered one of the most successful peace processes in history.

The Irish Diaspora

Over 70 million people worldwide claim Irish heritage. The largest Irish communities are in:

  • Boston — the most Irish city in America
  • Liverpool — strong Irish roots, especially in football
  • Chicago — dyes its river green on St. Patrick's Day
  • New York — hosts the world's oldest St. Patrick's Day parade (1762)

"Plastic Paddies"

A controversial term for people who claim Irish heritage but have no real connection to Ireland — often Americans who celebrate St. Patrick's Day but know little about the country. Irish people have mixed feelings about this phenomenon.

The Reunification Debate

Since Brexit, the question of Irish reunification has become more serious. Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU, creating tension with the rest of the UK. Sinn Féin, a nationalist party, is now the largest party in Northern Ireland. A referendum on reunification could happen within the next decade.
