Introdução

Os condicionais do terceiro tipo (Third Conditionals) e os condicionais mistos (Mixed Conditionals) são as ferramentas mais sofisticadas para expressar hipóteses e arrependimentos em inglês. Enquanto o First Conditional fala sobre consequências prováveis no futuro e o Second sobre situações hipotéticas no presente, o THIRD mergulha no passado para imaginar resultados alternativos: "If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam." Já os MIXED conectam passado e presente de formas surpreendentes: "If I had taken that job in Dublin, I would be rich now."

Estas estruturas são essenciais para narrativas de arrependimento, análise histórica, críticas construtivas e especulação sobre como a vida poderia ter sido diferente. Third Conditional: If + Past Perfect, would have + Past Participle

O Third Conditional fala sobre situações IMAGINÁRIAS no PASSADO — coisas que NÃO aconteceram e suas consequências hipotéticas. É a ferramenta perfeita para expressar arrependimento. A estrutura é: IF + Past Perfect (had + past participle) na condição, e WOULD HAVE + Past Participle no resultado.

If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.

Mixed Conditionals: Conectando Passado e Presente

Os Mixed Conditionais combinam uma condição em um tempo com um resultado em outro. O tipo mais comum é: IF + Past Perfect (situação passada) + WOULD + base form (resultado presente). Isso expressa como uma decisão passada afeta o presente atual.

If I had taken that job in Dublin, I would be rich now.

Alternativas a IF em Condicionais

Em contextos formais e literários, podemos omitir IF e inverter o sujeito e o auxiliar HAD/WERE/SHOULD. Esta estrutura soa extremamente elegante e é comum em discursos, literatura e escrita acadêmica.

WISH e IF ONLY para Arrependimento

WISH e IF ONLY seguidos de Past Perfect expressam arrependimento sobre o passado. A diferença é que IF ONLY é mais emotivo e dramático. Ambos significam 'eu gostaria que' ou 'se ao menos' em relação a algo que NÃO aconteceu.
