Irlanda Moderna

Modern Ireland

Introdução

Modern Ireland is very different from the traditional image of priests, peat bogs, and poverty. Today, Ireland is a progressive, tech-driven, multicultural European nation. Understanding modern Ireland means understanding the Celtic Tiger, the tech boom, and how a conservative Catholic country became one of the world's most liberal societies.

🐯 The Celtic Tiger (1995-2008)

Ireland's economy exploded in the late 1990s. GDP grew by 6-10% per year. Unemployment fell from 16% to 4%. For the first time in 200 years, young Irish people did not have to emigrate. American tech giants — Intel (1989), Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook — chose Ireland as their European base because of the low corporate tax rate (12.5%) and English-speaking workforce.

💻 Silicon Docks

Dublin's docklands area is nicknamed "Silicon Docks" — home to Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Airbnb's European headquarters. Walking around Grand Canal Dock, you hear dozens of languages. It is a world away from the traditional image of rural Ireland.

🏳️‍🌈 A Liberal Revolution

In just 25 years, Ireland transformed from one of Europe's most conservative Catholic countries to one of its most progressive:

  • 1995: Divorce legalised (by only 0.5% margin!)
  • 2015: Same-sex marriage legalised by referendum (62% Yes)
  • 2018: Abortion legalised by referendum (66% Yes)
  • 2019: Blasphemy decriminalised

These changes were driven by young people, the decline of the Catholic Church's influence, and exposure to global culture through the tech boom.

🏠 The Housing Crisis

The Celtic Tiger's dark legacy is the housing crisis. After the 2008 crash, construction stopped. When the economy recovered, there were not enough homes. Today, Dublin rents are among Europe's highest. Many young professionals live with their parents into their 30s or commute from distant towns. "I'll never own a home" is a common phrase among Irish millennials.
