☘️ St. Patrick's Day

On 17 March, Ireland turns green! St. Patrick's Day celebrates Ireland's patron saint, who brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. The Dublin parade attracts over 500,000 people — but ironically, the first St. Patrick's Day parade was in New York in 1762!

Samhain: The Origin of Halloween

Before Halloween existed, the Irish celebrated Samhain (pronounced "Sow-in") on 31 October. It marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter — a time when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to be thin. People lit bonfires and wore costumes to scare away spirits. When Irish immigrants went to America, they brought Samhain with them — and it became Halloween.

Trad Music Sessions

A "session" (seisiún) is an informal gathering of musicians playing traditional Irish music in a pub. Instruments include: fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrán (frame drum), uilleann pipes, accordion, and bouzouki. Anyone can join — the ethos is communal and welcoming.

The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival

Every September, the small town of Lisdoonvarna in County Clare hosts Europe's largest matchmaking festival. Willie Daly, a traditional matchmaker, uses his famous "Lucky Book" to pair up singles. It is part funfair, part speed-dating, and entirely Irish!
