Irish Influence on English Word Order

Irish (Gaeilge) has influenced Hiberno-English sentence structure. The Irish language puts the verb first, which is why Irish English sometimes sounds different from British English.
I am after eating. (= I have just eaten)
Eu acabei de comer. (estrutura irlandesa)
It is herself that is the doctor.
É ela mesma que é médica. (ênfase irlandesa)
Do you be working late? (= Do you usually work late?)
Você costuma trabalhar tarde?

📚 The Irish Language Today

Irish (Gaeilge) is a Celtic language, related to Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. It was the dominant language of Ireland until the 19th century, when English replaced it during British rule.

Where Irish is Spoken:

  • Gaeltacht areas: Regions where Irish is the community language — mainly in Connemara (Galway), Kerry, Donegal, and Cork
  • Schools: All Irish children learn Irish from age 4 to 18
  • Media: TG4 (Irish-language TV channel), Raidió na Gaeltachta, and Irish-language newspapers

Irish in Daily Life:

Even if you do not speak Irish, you will see it everywhere: on road signs, in official documents, and in place names. Dublin comes from "Dubh Linn" (Black Pool). Galway is "Gaillimh". Killarney is "Cill Airne" (Church of the Sloes).

The Gaeltacht Summer:

Every summer, thousands of Irish teenagers attend Irish-language summer camps (coláistí samhraidh) in Gaeltacht areas. It is a rite of passage — three weeks of speaking only Irish, dancing ceili, and making friends for life!
