Padrões Verbais Avançados

Introdução

Os padrões verbais (verb patterns) são as combinações fixas entre verbos e as formas que os seguem — infinitivo com TO, gerúndio (-ing), ou infinitivo sem TO. No nível B2, você domina as exceções e nuances que distinguem um falante intermediário de um avançado. Saber que "enjoy" exige -ing mas "enjoy to" soa estranho é uma coisa; saber que "stop to smoke" e "stop smoking" têm significados completamente diferentes é outro.

No Reino Unido, os padrões verbais refletem a famosa polidez britânica. Expressões como "Would you mind helping me?", "I regret to inform you", e "I can't help thinking" são usadas diariamente em escritórios, lojas e pubs. Dominar estas construções é essencial para soar natural em qualquer contexto britânico.

Verb + Gerund vs Infinitive: Different Meanings

Alguns verbos mudam de significado dependendo de serem seguidos por infinitivo ou gerúndio. STOP TO DO = parar uma atividade para começar outra. STOP DOING = cessar uma atividade. REMEMBER TO DO = lembrar-se de uma obrigação. REMEMBER DOING = lembrar-se de ter feito.

I regret to inform you that your application was unsuccessful.

Lamento informar que sua candidatura não foi bem-sucedida.

I regret telling him about the surprise party.

Me arrependo de ter contado a ele sobre a festa surpresa.

Verb + Object + Infinitive

Quando um verbo tem um objeto antes do infinitivo, a estrutura muda. MAKE e LET usam BARE INFINITIVE (sem TO). Verbos de percepção (SEE, HEAR, WATCH) também usam bare infinitivo para ação completa. WANT, NEED, EXPECT, TELL, ASK usam TO + infinitivo.

The headteacher encouraged the students to apply to Oxbridge.

O diretor encorajou os alunos a se candidatarem a Oxford ou Cambridge.

The bouncer wouldn't let us into the club without ID.

Estas três expressões são constantemente confundidas. USED TO + infinitivo descreve HÁBITOS PASSADOS que não existem mais. BE USED TO + -ing descreve uma situação FAMILIAR no presente. GET USED TO + -ing descreve o PROCESSO de se acostumar.

I used to commute on the Northern Line every day.
