Modais de Especulação

Introdução

Os modais de especulação permitem expressar graus de certeza sobre o presente e o passado. No Reino Unido, a especulação é praticamente um esporte nacional — especialmente sobre o tempo, a Família Real, e os resultados do futebol. A escala vai de MUST (quase 100% de certeza) a CAN'T (impossibilidade total), passando por MAY, MIGHT e COULD.

No passado, adicionamos HAVE + Past Participle: MUST HAVE BEEN (quase certeza de que foi), MIGHT HAVE BEEN (possibilidade de que tenha sido), CAN'T HAVE BEEN (impossibilidade). A cultura britânica de understatement significa que "It might rain" pode significar "Está diluviano", e "not bad" pode significar "excelente". Dominar estas nuances é fundamental para entender o humor e a comunicação britânicos.

Speculation in the Present: MUST, MAY, MIGHT, CAN'T

Use MUST quando há evidências fortes (95%+). Use MAY/MIGHT/COULD para possibilidade. Use CAN'T para impossibilidade. No British English, MIGHT é preferido a MAY em contextos informais.

Para especular sobre o passado, usamos HAVE + Past Participle. MUST HAVE indica dedução forte. CAN'T HAVE indica impossibilidade. MIGHT/MAY/COULD HAVE indica possibilidade no passado.

Shakespeare must have known London very well to describe it so vividly.

Adverbs of Certainty with Modals

Advérbios intensificam ou suavizam a especulação. DEFINITELY, ABSOLUTELY e CERTAINLY fortalecem a certeza. POSSIBLY, PERHAPS e MAYBE suavizam. No British English, 'perhaps' é mais formal que 'maybe'.

The Chancellor will definitely raise interest rates in the Budget.

O Chanceler definitivamente aumentará as taxas de juros no Orçamento.

The Royal Family can't possibly approve of this scandal.
