Inversion in Formal Conditionals

Em contextos formais e literários britânicos, podemos omitir IF e inverter o sujeito e o auxiliar HAD/WERE/SHOULD. Esta estrutura soa extremamente elegante e é comum em discursos parlamentares e textos acadêmicos.
Had the Prime Minister known about the scandal, he would have acted sooner.
