Every town in the UK has a High Street — the main shopping street where you find the bank, post office, chemist (pharmacy), and of course, pubs! British towns are organized around the High Street, and understanding this helps you navigate any British town.
In British English, a "chemist" is where you buy medicine (not a scientist), a "boots" is both a shop and a pharmacy chain, and you post letters at the Post Office — not the mail office. And if you need directions, Brits will always say "turn left at the pub" because pubs are the most recognizable landmarks!
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name common places in a British town
- Ask for and give directions
- Use British place names and landmarks
- Understand British transport vocabulary
- Use prepositions of place (in, on, at, near, next to)
